Sanctuary – our installation for White Night
So I thought I better put a page up here so people can get an easy summary of what these domes are all about!!

Sanctuary is the name of the installation, named from the film Logan’s Run which geekily influenced the idea.
For the Digital Festival in Brighton, the local Fabrica Gallery asked us to come and make artwork in their gallery space (whilst in between shows). Being such a great gallery, we were excited at the opportunity. The old church is such a lovely space. The work would be some kind of interactive digital art to be aimed at being shown on White Night on 29th October. We won’t be hosting the project at Fabrica, but they would allow us the opportunity to build, experiment and also invite the public in to see the work in progress and test it.
For those who don’t know it, White Night is inspired by the original Nuit Blanche in Paris, where art and creative events happen all round the city from 6pm until 6am. It’s a great night where the city comes alive and it’s so much fun. This years theme is Utopia, and so came forth the idea for the domes.. as the geodesic design of dome was built as part of a utopian plan for future housing. It became familiar in futuristic sci-fi movies.. like Logan’s Run, where civilisation lives inside a series of domes, protected from the desolate landscapes outside.
Sanctuary will be an interactive light and sound installation. The sketch image above show’s the idea in situ, at St. Peter’s Church, a great central location in Brighton. We plan to have three domes (all 3m diameter) which will be lit from the inside. The audience will be able to control the domes from a control panel where they can push buttons to change the lights and also play tones.. imagine that scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind and you’re pretty close! Basically it will be an immediate and playful way for adults and kids to make sounds and change colours and try to create their own harmonious Utopia.
Come down and check it out.. on the north lawn of St. Peter’s Church opposite the Phoenix Gallery, on White Night, 29th October 2011. times TBC but starting at roughly 7pm… finishing depends on the council but will be before the clocks change back that night… 1am BST.
