End of Making Space @ Fabrica

Sadly we had to pack up after our two weeks (6 days) at Fabrica. It was a fantastic time and opportunity to develop our project and build on ideas. The final two days inviting the audience into to comment and test the dome was invaluable. We had great response and people were keen to see the final installation which is great. We’re editing a video to show but in the meantime here is a slideshow of photographs of our time at Fabrica.. thanks so much to Fabrica for the opportunity! It was appreciated and amazing!!

Fabrica – day 5

whoops.. missed a day and you may have noticed our website was down.. this was due to a security issue where one of our plugins got hacked and therefore we got shut down. it’s a plugin which uses something called timthumb (usually linked to image sliders) so if you use them then maybe look at the link so see if this may affect you.

but we are back in business! sadly this means our photos from fabrica have been disabled but i’ll get them back up within the next day when we finish our time at the gallery. The dome got switched on, the gallery darkened and the public came in to check out what we were doing. There were maybe 20+ people and thanks to all that called in and gave their opinions while testing it.

One exciting moment for was enabling an iphone to control the LED’s and sounds via OSC (open sound control). It removed the user from the tracking pad and allowed a more slick fluid interaction with the controls. We also used the track pad on the laptop, basically using mouse coordinates to affect RGB values and the pitch of sound samples.

There’s still one more day to go so if you are around, please do call into Fabrica Gallery and have a go. tomorrow from 11 until maybe 4:30 as we have to take the project down before the end of the day. sad times. all photos later and video too!!!

Fabrica – day 3

Today we cracked on with making the cover.. Georgie gave us a lesson on the sewing machine and I (rich) got stuck in and really enjoyed making the cover. It’s probably just over half done… everything takes so much longer than anticipated but we’re still on track thankfully. I stitched a few wrong triangles together but no big problems… Maff got on with preparing the frames of the other domes.. and Ryo popped in to help us aswell! …

…the sweat shop continues.

The last day of the week ended too soon for our liking and we can’t wait to get back next Tuesday.. especially to prepare for the public coming to see next weds and thursday. We finished with a much needed pint or two at The Foundry,,, exhausted but in good spirit.

Fabrica: day two – the fabric

Day two in Fabrica saw us concentrating on the fabric.. making the cover for the dome. We bought 15 meters of waterproof material and after all the tests on the dome, set about preparing to make the real version. it took the whole day to get all the triangles cut out and ready.. georgie came in to help with the sewing machine and ryo helped with cutting the material… i got busy on the iron. it’s all a bit of a factory sweat shop at the moment but it will soon appear as art.

after we finished, Fabrica held the second talk in their Brave New World series for the Digital Brighton Festival. Four artists discussed how they use the internet as extension of their work. It was great and really interesting view of ways to utilise social media to your advantage as an artist. Our dome loomed in the corner. Next week Laurence talks and we should have the dome as a disco in the background!

Fabrica: day one – the frame

First day in Fabrica was good but mostly about settling in. Slowly transporting all our gear down to the gallery, we mainly wanted to get the frame for the dome up by the end of the day. We had changes to make since being up in the garden so spent the afternoon drilling and making new pins for the connectors.. wooden instead of metal nails.. after the blood incident last time this was best!

It was a quiet day with myself (rich) and Maff only but we achieved what we hoped and were glad to have the structure standing again in the gallery! it looks good in the space and maybe felt bigger in there than we had realised.

The main work starts tomorrow, making the cover but a few more of the group join us to help.

we built our first proper dome structure and tested it with lights at night under a sheet. the LED’s work beautifully (fully controllable analog LED’s from adafruitindustries.com). You can see jack up against the glowing dome.. and no it actually is the main one not the model.. we set the lights on random colour selection, sat back and gleamed with joy.

we’ll have a mini version working at the maker’s faire this saturday 3rd 10-5 and it’s free in. come check out all the great creations including some of our project work made during the MA course.

venue for White Night 2011

We have confirmed a venue for this years White Night to show our project, which we are making and experimenting with at Fabrica for the Digital Brighton Festival. We will be presenting the dome installation by St. Peter’s Church on the north side park area. We’re pretty excited about this and look forward to the night but have plenty to do in the meantime.

You can call into Fabrica and see our work in progress during Digital Brighton on 21st and 22nd Sept. We’re inviting the public to come in and test the interactivity of our domes. Come and have fun and give us feedback!!

Making Space

As part of its Making Space programme (details at fabrica.org.uk) Fabrica is opening up its gallery space our digital art collective, Resonance.

We will be working in Fabrica over two weeks during Brighton’s Digital Festival in September to create and test an interactive work, which will be shown at this year’s White Night Festival and will follow its theme of Utopia. People will be invited during two of the days to visit the gallery to test, interact and contribute to the artwork in progress.

Making Space will take place on SEPT 13-15 & 20-22
Open to the public to drop in on SEPT 21 + 22
